VirtualBox 3.0: New Full-Screen Toolbar

Update: The full-screen toolbar can be moved to the top of the screen, which (IMHO) is a much more usable location. To move it to the top of the screen, open the Settings dialog for any VM, select General->Advanced and tick the Mini Toolbar: Show at Top of Screen.

It looks as though the VirtualBox Team have added a nice new feature in their 3.0 release – the full-screen toolbar!

When running a VM in full-screen mode, moving your mouse to the bottom of the screen displays the new toolbar, as shown below.

Sun VirtualBox 3.0 - Full-Screen Toolbar

All of the features available when running the VM in windowed mode are now available in full-screen mode, including: mounting devices, shared folders, shutdown options etc. The toolbar can also be pinned open if required.

For those Windows users reading this post, the toolbar behaves just like the Remote Desktop toolbar that is displayed at the top of the screen during a Terminal Services session.

This new feature is only available in the Sun VirtualBox 3.0 release and above. Download it now from VirtualBox.org.

    Ubuntu Wubi allows booting from a vitual hard disk;
    Windows 7 will allow booting from a virtual hard disk;
    Wish VirtualBox 3 also allowed booting from a virtual hard disk;
    Hope VirtualBox 3 will allow booting from a virtual hard disk;

    Is there any way to move the tool bar to the top of the screen like with terminal services? Its in the way of my start menu.

    HD – I was thinking the same last night, but there doesn’t appear to be any way to change the position of the bar. Bummer.

    Definitely, the VBox tool bar is on the way in FullScreen mode…. They have to give an option to move it to the top…

    yea agreed! Its quite distracting to have it in the same place with the windows task bar. I have to shift my location of my task bar instead….

    Guys, see the latest update to this post – it would appear that as of 3.0.8, you can put the toolbar at the top of the screen. Nick.

    Unfortunately 3.1.2 OSE does not provide any advanced tab in the settings any more. How can I fix the position?

    Version 3.2.4 and the toolbar is still at the bottom and still in the way of the Windows start menu…

    YES!!!

    There is!

    First, shut down your virtual machine.
    Next, go to the guest OS’s Settings, “General”, “Advanced” tab.
    Check “Show at top of screen”, or Uncheck “Show In Fullscreen/Seamless”

    It is possible to move the menu bar to the top of the screen.

    I have described it here: http://www.art0.org/techtips/general/moving-the-mini-menu-bar-in-fullscreen-virtualbox
